The hit and miss British weather was back up to its usual tricks as competitors were greeted with grey skies and rain in the air on the 26th May at the beautiful Eton Dorney rowing lake. With distances from 750m to 10km, this year’s event attracted over 1,200 entrants of all manner of abilities.

The day’s racing was kicked off with the marathon of swimming: the 10km distance. As a wetsuit offers swimmers more buoyancy, warmth and allows easier movement through the water; those brave enough to take on the distance without wearing one were split from those who were wearing a wetsuit in a separate start wave. With the water temperature at a cool 16.5 degrees they certainly deserve a special mention!

Chris Metcalf placed 8th (out of 222) in the 10k swim returning a time of 2:18:45 whilst colleague Jon Yates completed in a respectable 2:33:22 to place 28th.

In the 3k event, Becky Monaghan placed 9th out of 247 competitors returning a time of 43:46 whilst Julian Metcalf placed 27th in a time of 49:35

All participants enjoyed receiving an event medal plus a refreshing Vita Coco to hydrate them. There was even Spatone liquid iron supplement samples available to those felt like they needed a bit of an energy top up. Plus 10km and 5km swimmers were rewarded for their extra special achievement by getting a free FT Eton Swim water bottle after crossing the finish line.
